A now common part of any New South Wales summer, the bushfire is both a curse and a blessing for the landscape. Although it brings great devastation, it is an essential part of the lifecycle of native flora. The Banksia, for example, relies on bushfires to survive as its tightly closed seed pods will only open when exposed to the extreme heat of fire.
