Often referred to as the 'King of Aborigines', Bungaree was one of the defining Aboriginal figures after the First Fleet arrived in 1798. As a diplomat he played an important role as intermediary between the white colonisers and Aboriginal peoples. Highly trusted by those in power, he was known for his good natured sense of humour and was chosen by Matthew Flinders to sail with him as he explored coastal Australia.
