Characterised by their bushy spindle-like flowers, Banksias are a favoured cultivated native plant in Australian gardens, treasured in gardens for their ability to attract both bees and birds. There are several types of Banksia common to New South Wales with the most common being the Banksia Spinulosa or Hairpin Banksia. Banksias have also cameoed in Australian literature with an appearance in May Gibbs' Snugglepot & Cuddlepie books as the 'Hairy Banksia Men'.
