This doorplate is significant for two reasons: as an example of the type of historic ephemera collected by the Royal Australian Historical Society as it sought to document colonial history and as evidence of the proliferation of whaling in the nineteenth century. For whale bone to be used for such an everyday object as a door plate it must have been widely available.
